Meat Sauce

Here’s a classic and easy meat sauce recipe, perfect for pasta or lasagna!

Easy Meat Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground Italian sausage
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup beef or chicken broth (optional for a thinner sauce)
  • 1 tsp sugar (to balance acidity)
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brown the Meat: In a large skillet or pot over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add the chopped onion and garlic to the pot with the meat. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes, until softened.
  3. Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. If you’d like a thinner sauce, add the broth.
  4. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer the sauce for at least 20-30 minutes. The longer it simmers, the richer the flavor.
  5. Serve: Serve over cooked pasta and garnish with fresh basil or parsley, if desired.

This meat sauce is delicious on its own or layered in lasagna!
